Several elements of The Duelist of the Roses differ from the original card game while some original aspects, such as deck cost and card placements, remain unchanged, the game's mechanism is altered to include different card effects, terrain placement, reincarnations, and deck leader promotions. The game's battle mechanism is based on a 7x7 chessboard, with over 800 cards from the original franchise available to duel each opponent. Each team is playable, battling various characters throughout the plot in order to face the game's final antagonist, Nitemare, who appeared in the previous title. The series' main characters, Yugi Mutou and Seto Kaiba, play opposing teams named: the Lancastrians, and the Yorkists. The story, a sequel to Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories, is loosely based on actual events from the War of the Worlds. The game was released exclusively on Playstation 2 formats in Japan on September 6, 2001, and was later distributed in various territories throughout 2003.
